Our Review:

PlanetSappho.com is a great-looking and easy-to-navigate lesbian dating site for females and couples looking for anything from friendship, through casual dating to a committed relationship. As well as looking good, there are plenty of great features to help you get in touch with women near you and from all over the world.

As mentioned above, PlanetSappho.com is a very polished site with a pale purple color-scheme and large photo slideshow on the homepage. It's by no means easy to find out the total number of members online. At the time of this review there were several thousand, mostly in the UK and Europe, with plenty in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand too. However, the site displays members nearest your location rather than everybody. Despite not knowing exactly how many were online, the amount of attention my profile attracted almost immediately was both encouraging and slightly surprising. After spending some time on the site you get the distinct impression that there's plenty of action going on here. Profiles are fairly detailed and you can upload up to 20 photos from your computer or webcam. These can be public (meaning that other members can see them) or private (meaning that access has to be granted by that member). In addition to the usual profile information (e.g. appearance, relationship status, looking for, hobbies and interests, etc.) you can upload a video intro (you can record this using your webcam on the site or upload from the pc), which needs to be approved by the site staff (this takes up to 2 days). Strangely, preview profiles don't give the location of members so it's not possible to know where a member lives without clicking on their full profile. However, you do get to learn the last time a member logged into the site, which helps to screen out fake or inactive profiles. 

To connect with other members there's a decent range of choice. Email is the usual way members get in touch with one another. The internal email system means that your messages are safely and securely stowed here rather than on an external email address. To break the ice with members you can send a wink by simply clicking on the appropriate icon on their profile (and hoping that they reciprocate). If you'd rather chat in real time then there's the instant messenger (IM) feature. Again, you just click on the profile of the person you wish to chat with and click on the icon to send an IM request (bear in mind that they have to be online to chat). In addition to regular IM (which is text chat only), there's an audio-video IM feature, which means that you can see and hear the person you are chatting with, so there's no need to rely on text only. This is a great feature of the site, allowing you to get to know the member a little better than you would otherwise. There are also chat rooms that you can access (and plug in your webcam too) where you can chat with multiple members of PlanetSappho.com. Another interesting feature is the 'datecast'; this allows you to perform a search and send a 'flirt' to everyone in your search results (if you like to speculatively cast your net wide). What happens is that all of the relevant members are sent a preformatted message and invited to respond. You'll most likely either be deluged or disappointed. You can also rate members and connect to others by creating a network of friends or by adding profiles to your favorites list. If you want to block a member you can also do that here.

Free members get to create a profile, search (basic) and browse profiles, rate other members, view your activity page (records your movements), use public chat rooms, wink and send a datecast. However, free members cannot send or read emails, or use the IM features or private chat rooms. Gold members get unrestricted communication privileges on email, IM and chat room features, view larger profile photos, comment on photos create and watch profile videos from all members. In terms of value, it's basically cheaper the longer you sign up. However, it's not too much of a gamble as the site is a good one and you're pretty much guaranteed plenty of interaction with other members, online or dating. Finally, there's a good FAQs section to answer general questions about the site, with email support. You can also post your photos for them to scan and upload (photos are not returned).

PlanetSappho.com is one of the best lesbian dating sites on the web. With some great features, including comprehensive search tools and novel ways of communicating such as the 'datecast', it's a quality site with a buzzing online presence and massive membership base that you really should check out.
